Not recommended. We tried to stay there yesterday night and some local people, probably drunk, came to the car park and banged our campervans and intimidated us for half an hour at midnight, until the police arrived. The police said it's not common for these "anti-freedom camping" guys to go this only legal spot in Takaka, but it actually felt like it's not the first time that they are having these issues in the town. It made me think, that maybe the ones that need education are not the freedom campers, but the local communities that are so full of hate about that type of tourism.

Pretty hard place to enjoy freedom camping. 12 bays officially, but about that many vans last night and only 3 were parked in the correct spots. Of those 12, only 5 were certified self contained. If the place is quiet, I'm sure it's fine for a night. But unfortunately it was Friday and there's a lot of drinking in this town. There were three vans with uni. students who came in late headed to the bar and came back pissed, only to talk loudly until 2 AM. 2 of the 3 vans weren't self contained. We also had a drunk guy lean against our van while he tried to get in his (parked) next to us - it took him 20 minutes, yes, he was that drunk. Good spot only if you have to be here, don't expect much. Suspect as the rules are being abused, eventually it w
