4x4 not strictly needed when coming from the south but definitely when coming from the north.

2 hours from hanmer Spring with a van no 4x4, difficult road, take your time to go there!It's stunning but don't know if it worth it..

My L300 Mitsubichi van didn't want to go up that steep mountain.. It came right in the first few minutes of driving so luckely I knew from the start that i'm not going to make it there. Will try next time with a bigger engine machine :D otherwise the start of the road wasn't bad, and if it continues the same way then it shouldn't be a problem for 2WD to get there.
