Lovely hut- newly painted and fixed up. Not a bad walk coming from the carpark, along the river so I wore sandals for most of the time. We actually went to the hut from mt fyffe hut so over the summit, down some scree to Kowhai Saddle. To the saddle was great! After the saddle was horrid- very overgrown (being autumn) with spikey plants that cut up my arms and legs, the "track" went along the river (in and out) so really needed to pay attention to the orange markers when they were around to know when to leave the river and not go down a waterfall, there is didymo in the river making the rocks super slippery so thankfully we had hiking poles. The sign says 2 hours to the hut from the saddle but it took us 3 and some people in the intentions book took up to 4 hours. Just plan with gaiters :)
