Description
Freedom camping permitted in CERTIFIED SELF-CONTAINED VEHICLES ONLY. Limit of 10 vehicles per night.
Maximum stay 3 nights (please arrive after 4pm and leave before 10am).
Access to the overnight camp ground is off Marine Parade.
The camp site is right on the edge of the beach, ideal for an evening's stroll along the boardwalks or the beach itself. From Marine Parade you can watch the Little Penguin (Koror) coming ashore at dusk. The Little Penguin is the smallest species of penguin, at full stretch (35-43 cms) they're not much taller than a rugby ball standing on end.
It's only a short walk into town and to the Bay Hill. Simply head for the 'big steps' or lift which will take you up to The Piazza, The Bay Hill and Stafford Street where we have a plethora of bars and restaurants.
The Port of Timaru is a busy place at night, light sleepers may want some earplugs.
Please camp responsibly:
Always use a toilet
Please dont litter
Please dispose of toilet waste sensibly
Respect your fellow campers
Be prepared - Weather in New Zealand can change unexpectedly so make sure you check the forecast for any warnings and always carry appropriate provisions

Close to the beach, clean toilets. Saw lots of penguins just after sunset. Even though the parking lot was empty you can't stay during the day, but you can move literally 10m in front and park there which is a bit silly.

Get you some sleep drops and you'll be right. Road to dock and all surrounding roads are used as race tracks at night. From the site you can hear all cars up in town, and right near the site.

Great spot but a bit noisy- so put your earplugs in! It's walking distance over to the shore where you can see the at night Free "private" cold showers and toilets, benches and tables and a park with frisbee golf. Only 10 "camper" can stay per night - comes by first come kinda things. So big campers can come and park in 2,3 spots.
