Description

This track offers an easy route (achievable by older children) into a dramatic alpine landscape that includes snowfields, glaciers, sheer rock cliffs and waterfalls. 10 km return via same track. About 15 minutes from the Raspberry Flat car park, cross a swing bridge across the West Matukituki River. The track climbs through a small gorge into beech forest, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with good views of the Rob Roy Glacier. Access is restricted to the lower lookout when avalanche danger is present (MayNovember). The track starts at the Raspberry Creek car park, 54 km west of Wanaka on the Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road. The last 30 km are unsealed. The last 10 km is a fine weather road only and subject to washouts and flooded creeks that can be impassable check road conditions before you leave. The drive takes about an hour. Transport services from Wanaka to the car park are available. Dogs are not permitted. No camping or overnight parking allowed.

The rob roy Track is closed until 25th May if I understood the sign correctly (not mentioning which year). The bridge is under construction. What a pity. There are some other tracks, but they are more flat following the valley

Road was easy access. Most fords didn't even have water today. Lower lookout is worth it for sure. But if you can find the strength the upper lookout offers a far greater experience. Lower lookout=1 waterfall. Upper lookout=20+ waterfalls. Just amazing. However the track from lower to upper is 1.5km (not 1km as stated on the signs) and was partially in rough shape. (Fallen trees, climb over rock debris etc). But still absolutely doable and worth it.

Google will tell you it takes two and a half hours to get here from wanaka but it only took us an hour in our camper, just be wary of the fords if it has been raining! There's currently a slip between the lower and upper viewpoints but it's easy enough to circumvent. We're all adults, assess your risk and only do it if you feel safe. That being said, the upper viewpoint is in a whole different league to the lower one, absolutely stunning!
