Surat Bay Road, Clutha District, South Island.

Surat Bay is a great spot in The Catlins to see sea lions. You will find a large colony of New Zealand Sea Lions (Whakahao) interacting or sleeping on the beach. This species is the world's rarest Sea Lion and is only now rebuilding its mainland population, after being hunted to virtual extinction over 200 years ago. Keep your distance! At least 20 metres from those that are active and at least a 10 metre distance from those sleeping. Do not disturb them, surround them, or block their access to the sea.

Also walked from Surat to Cannibal bay, return took us an hour and a half. Only saw a couple of sea lions but the scenery is beautiful.

Tasman Travels

Did the Surat Bay to Cannibal Bay today. Was great, took around two and a half hours with lots of stops and enjoying the view. Was very windy and wet but we saw perhaps 3 Sea Lions on Surat, I'm sure more would be around if people didn't let their fecking dogs run around and we saw 1 at Cannibal. Lovely walk. 1 huge doing his daily cleaning around 5pm, at the corner of the beach.
