Description
Stunning, remote campsite adjacent to a surf beach with good fishing, hunting, tramping and mountain biking nearby. Access is via boat/flying & foot/4WD only.
There are 11 non-powered/tent sites. Bookings not required - first come, first served. Facilities include non-flush toilets and water from a tap (not treated - boil before use). Fires are not permitted at any time. All rubbish must be taken out with you.
Boat or fly by private aircraft to Moawhitu in Greville Harbour/Wharariki, or take a water taxi from Te Aumiti/French Pass to Kapowai, and then continue on foot, mountain bike, quad bike or vehicle along the 27 km road to Moawhitu.
If driving, it's essential you have a 4WD vehicle and experience - the last 2 km of the road is steep, narrow and winding. The surface can be slippery after rain and there are steep drop offs.
The camp is a 300 m walk from the beach and a 1 km walk from the airstrip. There is no vehicle access to the airstrip.
Moawhitu is exposed to high winds and rough seas so extreme care needs to be taken when leaving boats and aircraft overnight. No public moorings are available.
There is a landing fee of $10.00 at the airstrip.
Dogs with a DOC permit only. Contact the relevant DOC office to obtain a permit.
