Description

This historic alpine hut located in Rock and Pillar Conservation Area, in the Coastal Otago area is owned and managed by the Rock and Pillar Hut Trust. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served. Fees to be paid at the hut. The 16-bunk hut has solar lighting, a large common room and table tennis facilities, but no heating. Trampers need to bring their own cookers and utensils. Candles are banned from the hut for fire safety reasons. The Rock and Pillar Hut Trust are currently trialing a thermosiphoning (solar) air panel to increase the ambient temperature in the hut. There is no other artificial heating source. There is a marked route maintained by the Rock and Pillar Hut Trust from Glencreag. This is signposted from SH87 (Wandle Road) 5 km north of Middlemarch, near the McKinnon Road junction. 2WD access to the parking area is through cattle stops on private property. Walk the marked route from the carpark.
