You need a chemical toilet for every 8 people on site. Buckets with lids are not acceptable as a toilet. Inspectors patrol the campgrounds. You must have a permit before you camp and either display your permit at your campsite or have it available on request by an inspector. Open fires are prohibited at all locations, you must have gas for cooking. Drinking water is not available at any camping site, you must provide your own water. Pouawa is located approximately 18km from Gisborne city. There's good swimming, fishing and diving. During the Christmas holiday period a 70 km/hr speed restriction is in place on the state highway in this area to protect campers. For your safety no tents or caravans are allowed within 10m of the road edge. No vehicles are to park within 5m of the road edge. The ground is marked out with the 5 and 10 metre lines. Rubbish bags are provided with your permit. We encourage you to recycle, take it to the recycling centre in town. Do not leave rubbish bags on the roadside. Take rubbish bags to the signposted "Collection Point' area by the sign, on Mondays and Fridays. Also Wednesdays during the peak Christmas/New Year period. Rubbish is collected in the mornings. Your dog is allowed at your camp site, but for the safety of other campers they must be under your control.
