Description

This is a standard nine-bunk hut in the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tne Conservation Park in the East Coast region. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served. A very popular hut for hunters, this hut is managed by the NZ Deer Stalkers Association and Department of Conservation. Facilities include heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use). This hut doesn't have a constant supply of firewood. Getting there 3 hr 30 min via Taumutu Stream from Central Whirinaki Hut 3 hr from Plateau Car Park The track goes up river to Taumutu Stream and branches. Turn off to Upper Whirinaki Hut and Mangamate Hut is to your left. At the next intersection turn right (the left track leads to Mangamate Hut). Climb a small saddle then the track drops down through forest to a clearing. Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
