Te Tuhi - North South Track, Kaimai Mamaku Park, North Island.
Description
This is a serviced 12 bunk hut in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park in the Bay of Plenty region. The hut must be booked online in advance.
Facilities include heating, lighting and mattresses. You need to be self sufficient with food, cooking equipment, a warm sleeping bag, warm clothing and wet weather gear.
The hut is on the site of the previous Ngamuwahine clearing and shelter on the North South Track one hour south of the Te Tuhi / Ngamarama / North South track junction.
The hut can be accessed by multiple tracks and road ends. Refer to a map to identify the best route for your trip.
The following southern Kaimai road ends are suggested and require a moderate level of fitness and an overnight pack.
Te Tuhi Road via Te Tuhi Track (west) to North South track 3 hours.
Whakamarama Road via Ngamarama track and North South track 4 hours.
Goodwin Road, past Wairere Falls to the North South track 5 hours.
Whakamarama Road via Leyland OBrien and North South track 5 hours.
Ngamuwahine Road via Leyland OBrien and North South track 5 hours.
Old Kaimai Road via North Henderson Tramline and North South Track 5 hours.
Old Kaimai Road via West Henderson Tramline and North South Track 6 hours.
SH29 Kaimai Summit via North South Track 6 hours.
In wet weather tracks can become muddy. In heavy rain, some streams may become impassable and extreme caution is required.
The Backcountry Hut Pass and other DOC tickets are not valid for use at Te Whare Okioki.
