Description

Tangihua Hut is an eight-bunk standard hut, located in Tangihua Forest in the Northland region. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served. Facilities include matresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use). The route to the hut requires a high degree of skill and experience and route-finding ability. Suitable for well equipped trampers. Access the Tangihua Forest via Omana Road. From the Omana Road access car park, you will need to walk 30 minutes along a formed road to the bush line. From here, it is another 15 minutes until you reach Lions Lodge. To reach the Tangihua hut from the Lodge follow the Te Haua Uru Track which turns into the Northern Tangihua Route. This will take 89 hr. An alternative route to the hut is via Tangihua Road which takes approximately 2 hours and crosses private land. You must get the landowner's permission to access the track from the Tangihua Road end. Before you start your trip contact the Whangrei office. Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
