Description

If you are in a fully self-contained vehicle you can camp anywhere in our district except in the prohibited areas. You can stay up to 3 nights in each area. If your campervan or motorhome is fully self-contained (with a toilet, wastewater tank and rubbish facilities on board) then you may camp overnight for free on most land administered by the Council, away from the town centres and residential areas. There is some public land including DoC reserves which are excluded. Please observe all no camping signs. Freedom camping in prohibited areas is not permitted and is likely to result in a parking infringement notice and monetary fine from the local council. If you don't have a fully self-contained campervan or motorhome (one with a toilet, wastewater tank and rubbish facilities on board) then you cannot freedom camp anywhere in the Waikato district. Instead, you should stay in a holiday park or camping ground.

Nice grass area for SC to spend the night. Just not a lot of flat spot. Sunset where just in front of us, we where the only one to spend the night here. Very quiet and good to spend the night and go surfing early!

Raglan is not a friendly place and this site was no exception. Having driven around for over an hour to find somewhere to stay (no one would take us in a paid site as we have a dog), we found a patch of grass on a main road, opposite a lot of houses (this spot is a very residential area) that is marked as a freedom camp space. The area is very muddy, though flat, with no other amenities. We parked up on this busy road for a very interrupted sleep, there were loud revs and beeps most of the night, but the real kicker was waking up to an egged van in the morning. Considering that tourism is probably the staple of Raglan's economy, its people are rude and un-welcoming. If New Zealand ever need an enema - this would be where they insert the hose... Raglan is the arse hole of the North Island!

It's a grass area, so not recommended when it has been raining.
