Lake Tutira Campsite

4.2 from 5 users.

Camp at the southern end of the freshwater lake, and walk to Table Mountain Trig for views of inland Kaweka, Maungaharuru Range and coastal Hawke's Bay. Enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking and sailing on the lake. Camping in tents is allowed. Note: There are two campsites in this area. This one, near the entrance is a DOC Campsite. Further along the road, over the causeway on the South Eastern edge of the lake is the Hawkes Bay Regional Council site.

Loved this spot! Don't be fooled by the signs that lead you to the regional site. The DOC website shows correctly that you can camp in the first area and that it's free (and way less busy than the regional site).

And yet another new Zealand lake supposedly awash with fish. Still haven't landed one and on my 2000th attempt.

It's very unclear if this specific spot is still a DOC Campsite. There is no signage to say it is. The 600m sign is inaccurate as it takes you to nowhere on the road that's campable. The Regional Park Campsite at the end of the road is very peaceful and has great sunsets. But as not DOC, assume you can't use the DOC pass here. Clearer signage needed.
