Description
This is a backcountry campsite in the Wellington area. 800 m from the Catchpool carpark and close to plenty of good walks into the Orongorongo Valley.
There are 10 non-powered/tent sites. Bookings not required - first come, first served.
Gates open summer 6am-8pm; winter 6am-6pm.
Fires are not permitted at any time.
Dogs on a leash only.
South of Wainuiomata follow the Coast Rd for 10 km to the main Remutaka Forest Park entrance. Drive 2.5 km to the top carpark (800 m past the Catchpool carpark). Short section of gravel road and stream ford. This is a 45 minute drive from Wellington. Walk along the Five Mile Loop Track for about 15 minutes to find the campsite.
Pay fees at the Catchpool Valley Campsite entrance or the Wellington Visitor Centre.
Risk of treefall during high winds. Due to a high number of dead and dying trees in this area, camping is not recommended in windy weather.
